LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the teaching unit, students will be able to:

  • Read and interpret usual pure-compound thermodynamic diagrams,
  • Calculate a multiphase thermodynamic equilibrium.
  • Describe and explain the basic concepts of electrochemistry, including electrochemical reactions,
  • Apply the basic concepts of electrochemistry to electrolyzers and fuel cells to analyze their operation,
  • Assess the impact of operating conditions on the short- and long-term performance of electrolyzers.
  • Memorize the fundamentals of the electricity value chain, identify equipment used for the grid and list the yields at each step of the energy transformation,
  • Describe the different pathways to produce low carbon hydrogen,
  • Compare the technologies to produce low carbon hydrogen in terms of CO2 emissions, challenges, and costs.
